Common questions

How many grams of protein should I eat to build muscle?

Most research supports 1.6 to 2.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day, which is about 0.7 to 1 gram per pound. A 180 lb lifter lands at roughly 130 to 180 grams a day. Aim toward the top of that range during a cut to help keep muscle. Split it across 3 to 5 meals of about 30 to 50 grams each.

How do I track macros while bulking?

Set calories about 250 to 500 above maintenance and aim to gain roughly 0.25 to 0.5 percent of body weight per week. Hit your protein number first, then fill the rest with carbs and fats. Weigh yourself several mornings a week and compare weekly averages. If the average isn't moving after two weeks, add about 100 to 200 calories a day.

How do I track macros while cutting?

Set calories about 300 to 500 below maintenance and aim to lose roughly 0.5 to 1 percent of body weight per week. Keep protein high (around 2 grams per kilogram) and keep training heavy. Track weekly average body weight, not single weigh-ins. If you lose faster than 1 percent a week for several weeks, eat a little more.
